ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) - Investigators were searching for a missing 15-year-old Makayla Jones on the same day a group of volunteers planned to search vacant homes for missing children.

Jones was last seen Thursday afternoon at a bus stop near Hamilton and Hodiamont in north St. Louis. She was later found safe on Friday

The search for Makayla came at the same time a group of volunteers planned to search vacant homes and abandoned buildings in North City for missing children.

"It is concerning and with her only being 15. This has never happened before. We're a little concerned about it," said Melissa Chatman, Makayla's cousin.

Police said Jones got off the bus to go to work at Hodiamont and Skinker Thursday afternoon, but never showed up.

"It is another child it, it hurts. This is our youth. Not knowing if she is ok," said Chatman.

Chatman said the family is beside themselves.

"We just pray that's what we are doing praying and doing the work," she says.

Doing the work meant hitting the pavement. Chatman joined a group of volunteers who were already set to canvas parts of North City looking for missing youth.

"Something has to be done with this. I mean there's so many missing boys and girls. We have to come together as a community and do what is best," said Derk Brown.

Brown organized the search a few days ago. Saint Louis Police didn't assist, but were on hand to make sure things went smoothly as volunteers went into abandoned homes looking for any sign of life.

"These buildings need to be searched, the properties need to be searched as well as cleaned up," says volunteer Rosemary Nieters.

Police said Makayla was last seen wearing her school uniform, a navy blue polo shirt, jacket and khaki pants.
