EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (KMOV.com) – A St. Clair County Sheriff’s car was involved in a crash in East St. Louis Friday morning.

The deputy’s vehicle was hit by a suspect’s vehicle during a chase on 25th and Belleview around 4:30 a.m. After being broadsided by the suspect’s vehicle, the deputy’s vehicle overturned.

Officers from Belleville were pursuing the suspect’s vehicle at the time of the crash. The deputy was not directly involved in the pursuit, officials said.

The deputy suffered minor injuries and has since been released from the hospital.

The chase started after officers from Belleville noticed a car that matched the description of one that was carjacked from the 600 block of Benton Street Thursday night. When police spotted the car before 3 a.m. Friday in the 8400 block of Marybelle Avenue, they began pursing it, starting a chase that lasted about 25 minutes and went through parts of Belleville, Fairview Heights and East St. Louis.

According to police, two suspects, described as being 17 and 18 years old, were taken into custody after the crash.

Anyone with additional information regarding the incident is asked to contact police at 618-234-1212 or CrimeStoppers at 866-371-8477.
