ST. CHARLES, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

A Catholic school that has been in downtown St. Charles since the 1800s will close at the end of the school year.

The St. Louis Archdiocese says low attendance and struggling finances are the reason it is closing St. Peter Catholic School. It will now merge with St. Elizabeth-St. Robert School.

Enrollment has dropped from more than 300 students to around 100 students over the past few years. The school building also needs more than $500,000 in repairs.

Instead devoting money to repairs, the Archdiocese says it will go towards tuition for St. Peter's students at their new school.
