BRIDGETON (KMOV.com) -

The number of flu cases continues to both rise locally and surge nationally.

Statistics from the CDC show the virus is widespread in 43 states. Missouri and Illinois have been especially hard hit, as have parts of the south and east coast.

14,000 new cases are popping up a week and 20 children have died, five alone in the last week of January.

The elderly and children are considered the most vulnerable to get the flu.

Doctors at SSM DePaul Hospital in Bridgeton said they treated 95 cases of the flu last week, up from 66 the week before.

The most common form of the flu in 2017 has been Influenza AH3, which is a more serious version than normal. However, this year’s vaccine matches up with the virus very well, but less than half of Americans get a flu shot.

Experts say fly season runs until May, so it is not too late to get a flu shot.
