BALLWIN, Mo. ( -

Homeowners throughout the St. Louis area are complaining about Home Improvement Select operated by Shane Slaven.

Jerry Oliver of Ballwin says he paid the company $10,000 in June of 2016 for a new bathroom but still hasn't seen any work.

"I don't want this to happen to anybody else," said Oliver.

A Lake St. Louis couple told News 4 they paid the company $25,000 but still haven't seen any work. A Byrnes Mill man said he paid $2,000 down but still hasn't received anything. The Better Business Bureau issued an alert about Home Improvement Select citing 40 complaints.

Slaven told News 4 his company is out of business and he's in the process of filing for bankruptcy.

He said a business partner made some bad decisions leading to problems with the company. Slaven added some of the complaining customers canceled contracts and are not entitled to refunds. In other cases, Slaven said the work has been turned over to another contractor.

Oliver says he tried to cancel his contract in December of 2016, but an employee at Home Improvement Select told him he couldn't cancel. Oliver says he expects a full refund, but nearly 8 months after paying hasn't received a dime.

If that wasn't enough, there's more.

He wasn't just going after innocent customers, but his colleagues as well.

According to Maryland Heights Police, Slaven has also been charged with identity theft. The victim?  His own business partner.

Slaven is accused of opening a line of credit in someone else's name, using that person's social security number, then running up a $55,000 tab with multiple vendors.

Slaven now sits in jail.
