JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) -
Police say some communities in Jefferson County are seeing a jump in license plate thefts.
Mary Jane Smith said she walked out of the business where she works in Cedar Hill on Wednesday and found that both of her license plates had been stolen from her SUV.
"It's crazy, it's a little scary. I can't believe someone would have the nerve to do that in plain day in the afternoon," said Smith.
Smith said she reported the crime to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department and then checked her employer's recently upgraded surveillance system.
"I checked on the cameras and she was there on camera, caught in the act," Smith added.
Smith said she posted surveillance photos of the female suspect on Facebook, and in less than 24 hours three people had notified her of the suspect's identity and investigators had gone to the suspect's home and retrieved the stolen license plates.
A spokesman for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department said the suspect wasn't home when investigators went by her house.
