ALTON, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

More than 300 steelworkers at Alton Steel had vital personal information stolen in an email scam that targeted the company, according to the Steelworkers Union.

"The membership is definitely worried," said Local 3643 President Terry Wooden.

In a letter handed out to workers, the union told workers the information was taken in a phishing scam.

"What happened here was some entity was phishing and got into the computer system and was able to compromise all the W2 forms," said Wooden.

Alton Steel did not comment on the incident.

Wooden said he's already hearing that many steelworkers are finding out thieves have filed fraudulent tax returns in their names.

He said the company is urging workers to file their taxes as quickly as possible.
