UNION (KMOV.com) -

Franklin County Sheriff Steve Pelton presented an award to UPS driver Robbie Belew for his efforts to get help for a woman who was the alleged victim of severe domestic abuse in December.

"Because of Mr Belew's quick action there's no doubt in my mind this prevented further injury and perhaps saved a life that day. The Franklin County Sheriff's office is honored to call Mr. Belew a hometown hero," said Pelton.

Investigators say the woman's husband was holding her against her will at their home near Robertsville and had repeatedly beaten her, sexually assaulted her and threatened to kill her with a gun. Belew said he knew there was a problem when he arrived at the house to pick up some packages.

"She was definitely in distress, she was agitated and you know real jittery," said Belew.

Belew said the woman went to her vehicle to retrieve the packages and that's when she wrote on one of the boxes, 'call 911.' Belew said he left and stopped nearby so he could keep an eye on the house and called 911 as she'd asked.

James Jordan, 33, was arrested and charged with domestic violence, sodomy, felonious restraint, unlawful use of a weapon, armed criminal action, endangering the welfare of a child and possession of marijuana.

Belew said he spoke with the woman a week after the incident and she thanked him for his actions. He said he doesn't consider himself a hero and that he did what anybody else would have done.

"I think the real heroes are the men and women of the sheriff's department that responded, quickly," said Belew.
