MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

A chemistry teacher at Pattonville High School turned to a computer design class to solve a problem involving rockets used by his students.

Chemistry teacher Rob Lamb needed to find a better way for his students to launch rockets, so he enlisted the help of a computer design class.

The two classes worked together to design a new igniter using a 3D printer. Lamb’s students gained experience that staring at a computer screen would not be able to offer.

"Everyday they would finish one of their prototypes and we would be able to print it that night, and the next morning when they came in they would be able to hold it in their hand,” Lamb said.

The newly designed igniters were used for the first time on Wednesday.
