FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. (KMOV.com) – Two teenagers are in custody accused of shooting a 21-year-old man during a drug transaction in Fairview Heights Tuesday evening.

According to police, the two 14-year-olds robbed the victim of drugs and cash at the Longacre Ponds apartment complex around 6:20 p.m.

After robbing the man, one of the teenagers shot the victim in the head while he sat in the driver’s seat of the vehicle. After being shot, the victim’s vehicle accelerated and struck a large rock near the parking lot.

Following the shooting, the suspects took the victim from the car and dragged him to the back of one of the apartment buildings to search him, according to police.

Witnesses said they then saw the suspects run from the area.

Police said the suspects do not live at the apartment complex and the location appears to be have been chosen because of the isolation in the back parking lot.

The Fairview Heights Police Department said they received surveillance video from nearby businesses that showed the teenagers running in the area around the time of the shooting.

Detectives said they have recovered the weapon that is assumed to have been used in the shooting.

The suspects are being held at the St. Clair County Juvenile Detention Facility awaiting charges.

The victim was transported to a St. Louis hospital in grave condition. Thursday, officials said the victim remains in critical, but stable condition.
