UNIVERSITY CITY, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

A new program at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School in University City is giving students a chance to take on research projects about topics they love outside of the classroom.

Guided by their teacher, the school connects the student with someone in a relevant field of interest.

One recent project by a student focused on the Civil Rights Movement and its impact on today's society.

“The program lets me learn about areas that I really enjoy and don’t get a lot of information about in school,” Jude Fucetola, a 7th grader, said.

Other students had a passion to set up a school TV station.  They visited with a student ran station at Cor Jesu Academy in order to learn how to broadcast a TV program.

“We went there and they were very hospitable and it was really cool to be there,” Lana Gerard, an 8th grader, said. “We got, like, a hands on experience with them and we got to see it in person how it works instead of reading about it.”

At the end of their research project, all of the students have to give a presentation on their findings.
