ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

A new program in St. Louis is looking for young volunteers to help give away $10,000 in grant money to good causes.

The program is called Youth Engaged In Philanthropy STL, also known as YEP STL, and they’re imaging a better St. Louis.

Maddy To of YEP STL is looking for roughly two dozen high school students to help give the money away.

“They're not only going to be designing the grant application, they're also going to be deciding how we allocate the grant money,” To said. “This year we have $10,000.”

The money is from Youthbridge Community Foundation, and the idea is to give the money to non-profits that help young people in the St. Louis area.

At the same time, it helps develop and grow the next generation of philanthropists.

“Giving away money is easy,” Michael Howard, the CEO of Youthbridge said. “Giving it away effectively is difficult.  So this is about teaching them the business side of philanthropy.”

According to Howard, there are more than 10,000 charities in St. Louis.

“We're focused on charities that have a child or youth serving mission,” Howard said.

To is a sophomore at Washington University.  Last spring, she connected with Youthbridge to formulate the plan to put YEP STL together.

Interested high school students can apply on-line.  If accepted, they'll attend monthly meetings aimed towards deciding which non-profits will get the money.

The deadline for applications is February 15, and for those interested, click here.
