ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ill. (KMOV.com) – A man was hit by a stray bullet after getting off a MetroLink in St. Clair County after an attempted armed robbery victim ran to the area for help Monday night.

According to police, a 29-year-old man ran to the Emerson Park MetroLink Station for safety after he was threatened with a weapon for his property while in a nearby apartment. The victim told police the unidentified suspects followed him to the station.

Around 10:45 p.m., the attempted robbery victim arrived at the station as a MetroLink train was pulling in, which a 36-year-old man exited. The man who left the train was walking away when he was hit by a stray bullet fired by the armed robbery suspect.

The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office said the suspects left the area on foot following the incident.

The shooting victim was not involved in the attempted robbery and none of the events were related to the MetroLink, according to the sheriff’s office.

The injured man was taken to the hospital for treatment of the non-life threatening wound to the abdomen.

Officials said they are checking with MetroLink for possible security video to help identify possible suspects.
