Elderly man victim of fatal hit-and-run Monday night

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

A 79-year-old man was hit by a car and killed in west St. Louis Monday evening.

Police said James VanKast was walking in the northbound lanes of North Kingshighway near Vernon when he was hit around 5:45 p.m.

After being hit, VanKast reportedly went airborne and struck the windshield of a second vehicle.

The vehicle that originally hit VanKast, is believed to be a 2007 Honda Pilot, drove from the scene.

The 57-year-old driver of the second vehicle remained at the scene. The two passengers and driver refused medial treatment upon emergency crews arrival. 

VanKast was pronounced dead at the scene

The investigation is ongoing.
