Metro to roll out 30 new buses to improve safety

ST. LOUIS, Mo. ( -

Thirty new buses will soon be added to the MetroBus fleet with several safety improvements.

By Spring, MetroBus expects to have 26 new buses stay in the St. Louis metro and four their Illinois fleet.

Metro spokesperson Patti Beck said the reason for some of the new buses is to make sure all of them don’t need repairs and maintenance at the same time.

Beck said some of the buses have nearly a million miles on them.

Each new bus costs about $440,000.00 and we’re told metro replaces about 6 percent of their fleet every year.

The new buses are equipped with bright yellow rails to allow passengers to clearly know the areas they can hold if they have to stand while the bus is moving, according to Beck. The seats are also new, durable and easy to maintain.

Metro said they’ve improved the braking system, the engine and cooling systems to make your commute safe.

“So we are always looking for ways to improve on the efficiency on the buses as far as safety goes,” said Beck. “We want our customers to be comfortable, we want them to be safe on their trips every day. We want out operators to be comfortable.”

News 4 has done several stories on safety on all Metro services including trains, so perhaps on the most major improvements is the protective barrier around the driver.

“Our employees and the union that represents them actually came to us and asked if that would be something that they can provide and we are with this series of buses,” said Beck. “We listened to our operators we listened to our customers. This will help give them more reassurance.”
