FLORISSANT, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

A 25-year-old man was shot and killed by Florissant police Thursday after lunging towards officers with a knife, police say.

Just before noon, police said Elijah Smith called police and said he killed his mother, grandmother and uncle with a knife. Police say he then told them that he did not kill anyone and wanted “die by officer.” Smith also allegedly told police he heard voices and was locked in his basement.

Florissant officers then went to the home where Smith was at and called him. Smith allegedly answered the phone and said he was not okay before hanging up. Police tried to call him a few more times, but he did not answer.

Smith’s mother then ran out of the home and said he was chasing her with a knife. Another male and female inside the home then came outside.

Officers proceeded to go inside and went into the basement where they came upon a closed door.  The officers said their arrival but received no response.

The officers then opened the door and saw Smith allegedly holding a large hunting knife above his hand.

Officers told Smith to drop the knife numerous times, police said, but he did not comply. He then allegedly ran towards the officers who deployed a taser.

However, police say the taser didn’t work, and Smith kept running at him before two officers fired a combined nine shots at Smith, killing him.
