MADISON COUNTY, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

A man who caused a social media uproar was convicted of being a "Sexually Dangerous Person" by a Madison County jury.

Following the conviction, James Lopes will be committed indefinitely to a facility specifically designated for sex offenders at the Illinois Department of Corrections.

A petition was filed in April to declare Lopes a "Sexually Dangerous Person," which is a civil action, not a criminal charge, and required a trial by jury.

Illinois State's Attorney Tom Gibbons expressed his happiness with the verdict, "Their commitment to justice allowed us to secure this verdict that will ensure the safety of the children of our community by keeping this dangerous predator behind bars indefinitely."

Lopes represented himself, refusing a Court-appointed attorney. Jurors heard from two witnesses of at 2012 incident in Portland, Oregon. In that case, Lopes was charged with Attempted Sex Abuse against an 8-year-old girl.

Two mental health experts also testified regarding their independent evaluations and agreed he is sexually dangerous and the severity of his diagnosis makes it unlikely he could be successfully treated or rehabilitated.

Lopes still faces three counts of Grooming and Disorderly Conduct based on complaints that he inappropriately contacted children and their parents in Madison County in April 2016.

Lopes remains in custody and his bond has been revoked.

The case is set for a final hearing in about a month.
