Poplar Bluff Poplar Bluff -

After a search that lasted multiple hours, police now have a suspect in country who was wanted on five different state, and city, warrants for arrest.

Cortez Jones was arrested last week on four state warrants for arrest, which include Hit-and-Run, Possession of Marijuana, Non-Support, and Possession of a Controlled Substance. The fifth warrant, which is from the city of Poplar Bluff, is another Possession of Marijuana charge.

On Jan. 11, the Poplar Bluff Police Department, Butler County Sheriff's Department, SEMO Drug Task Force, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol attempted to contact Jones at a Poplar Bluff residence around 2:30 p.m.

Officers said Jones was made aware of the officers approaching the residence, and fled to a wooded area. A search for Jones was fruitless. Officers later interviewed two women, Elizabeth Cross and Brenda King, who denied they knew where Jones was.

Later that evening, around 5:15 p.m., police observed Jones riding in the passenger seat of an SUV while traveling west on Highway 60. When officers followed the vehicle Jones was riding in, the driver attempted to elude officers.

The vehicle later stopped on a rural road in Carter County, and Jones was taken into custody.

The two women who were interviewed by police, Cross and King, were found to also be riding in the vehicle. They were also taken into custody and later charged with Hindering Prosecution.

The women are currently being held in the Butler County Justice Center.
