FESTUS (KMOV.com) -

Festus police arrested 24-year-old Tyler Carter and charged him with car theft and burglary after breaking into Festus Lumber on Jan. 13 around 11 p.m.

Owner Jim Kottmeier told News 4 that power tools were found stacked up and a company vehicle being readied to haul away the merchandise.

"We had a vehicle in the drive through with the back hatch open and they had the keys in it. They were ready to roll, but fortunately we were able to catch them before that all happened," said Kottmeier.

A burglar alarm brought police to the business but officers left after finding all the doors locked and no sign of any activity inside. An employee who was also notified by the alarm company arrived later and accidentally encountered the suspect when he went inside to reset the alarm. He brought a gun for his protection.

Mike Politte told News 4, "I pulled my pistol out pointed it at him and told him 'don't move, put your hands on top of your head.' He made the comment 'you're not going to shoot me' and I said 'as long as you do what I tell you to do when I tell you to do it everything will be fine and he said okay."

Politte said he didn't know anyone was inside when he arrived and only pulled out his gun because the suspect was moving his hand toward his side and he feared the suspect may be reaching for a weapon. When police searched the suspect they found a boxcutter in his pocket.

When asked if Politte was prepared to use his weapon and shoot the suspect, he said, "That's a difficult question. Is anybody ever prepared to use their weapon? Had I had to I would have. Did I want to? No."
