ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Several local organizations celebrated Martin Luther King Day Monday by serving others.

The Baden Enrichment Stem Center gave free shoes to kids. 2017 marks the second year the center has offered such a program. Officials said they were given close to 900 pairs of shoes by St. Louis Family Church and Service International.

“We see smiles, we see hugs. We see parents constantly giving thanks and saying thank you,” said Antionette Cousins with the Baden Enrichment Stem Center.

Cousins said Martin Luther King Day should be about service to others.

“It is important not just to give, but to let people understand that it’s not just about saying what’s not happening. It is about actually going out and making things happen,” said Cousins.

70 percent of the shows were given away. The Baden Enrichment Stem Center is working with schools to give the rest of the shoes away to kids who could not be there Monday.
