COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

College students may have planned to return to campus this weekend, but the University of Missouri-Columbia said they should hold off on those plans.

At least until Monday.

Due to the incoming threat of ice making it's way through Missouri, Mizzou sent out an alert to students urging them to come back after the storm is over, Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Dr. Cathy Scroggs said in a news release.

The university is echoing the Missouri Department of Transportation's message to drivers in the state; to avoid travel until after the weekend.

"The safety of our students and their families is of topmost concern to us, so we are encouraging students not to return to campus for the start of the Spring semester until Monday, Jan. 16," Dr. Scroggs said.

While Mizzou has advised students traveling to the campus this weekend, the residence halls will be open as scheduled for those who live on the campus.

Classes begin on Jan. 17.
