MAPLEWOOD, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

As a possible ice storm threatens the St. Louis area this weekend, Ameren is trying to avoid a repeat performance of 2006.

That was a year when a summer storm and a December ice storm downed tree limbs and power lines leaving hundreds of thousands without power, sometimes for days.

"In 2006 we had taken stuff outside to keep it cold," Maplewood resident Sheryl Albers-Boyd remembered.  Her neighborhood had no power for four days after the ice storm.

Frustrations with Ameren only grew in the weeks and months after, leading the company to start an extensive tree trimming operation that still exists today.

"We trim about 4,000 circuit miles every year," said Kevin Anders, Ameren's Vice President of Operations and Technical Services. "We're on schedule and in good shape with regard to tree trimming," he continued.

Anders said Ameren is also loading trailers with repair equipment to be positioned throughout the region before the storm, and they're in contact with other utilities to provide extra repair workers if needed.
