ST. CHARLES (KMOV.com) -- The St. Charles area is dreaming up big plans for the future of the city and county. In order to kick start those dreams, city and county leaders teamed up to apply for a “Smart City” grant.

The title doesn’t come with any financial help but it would put them in touch with industry experts to get the plans rolling.

Their proposal focuses on three areas including transportation, public safety, and health and human services. A couple of the projects they want to work on include a data sharing system between first responders so they can get on scene faster. They also hope to put kiosks downtown to help visitors find their way, highlight places of interest, and give up to the minute transportation information. Another goal is to improve lighting and parking downtown in an effort to reduce congestion and fuel costs.

County leaders tell me they’ve been in touch with all the major cities in the area like St. Peters, O’Fallon and Wentzville to work on the proposal.

St. Charles will find out at the end of the month if it has been selected as one of five “Smart Cities.”

Even if not, county leaders told News 4 they still hope to get to these projects one way or another in the coming years.
