CASEYVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) – A Caseyville man is in the intensive care unit at a St. Louis hospital after being shot during a home invasion on Christmas Day.

Clayton D. Lawrence, 28, and another suspect broke into the victim’s home on Cliff Drive with the intent to steal money on Christmas morning, police said.

When the victim heard their movements he thought it was one of his kids dropping off presents and went to the front room, where he was allegedly confronted by a suspect who threatened to kill him.

"He said he woke up heard a noise went out to his living room and there was a man standing there threatening him with a gun and told him I will kill you," said Caseyville Police Chief, Frank Moore.

According to police, Lawrence asked the victim where the safe was and demanded money. When the victim told him there was no money, the suspect locked him in a bedroom, where he saw a fire safe in the closet.

After demanding the key to the safe, Lawrence allegedly fired several gunshots at the victim. The victim was grazed by a bullet, police said.

After no money was found in the safe, the suspect checked the room for money.

While Lawrence was checking the room, the victim charged at him and struggled for the gun, police said. During the struggle, the suspect fired several more gunshots, hitting the victim once.

After being shot, the victim continued fighting Lawrence and was able to get the gun away from him, but there were no bullets left in it, according to police.

When the victim told Lawrence to get out of the house, the suspect found his partner had left in the getaway car so he allegedly stole the victim’s car from the driveway.

The victim’s car was found a short time later by the Collinsville Police Department. Officials said the vehicle was engulfed in flames.

Lawrence was taken into custody in the 300 block of North main in Caseyville on Friday. According to police, he was inside a vehicle that was stolen out of Missouri and had not been entered as stolen yet.

Lawrence has been charged with home invasion, discharge of a firearm, aggravated battery and unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle. His bond has been set at $500,000.

According to officials, once lab reports are completed there may be additional charges for Lawrence and another suspect.

Police said they do not believe the victim knew the suspects. They also said they believe the suspects may have targeted the wrong house.
