An Illinois high school wrestling team is out around $5,500 in personal belongings and team equipment after thieves broke into their vehicle last Friday.

The South Elgin High School wrestling team was in Collinsville for the weekend to compete in wrestling tournament. The school is located almost an hour west of Chicago.

Following the first day of the tournament, Dec. 30, the wrestling team ate dinner next to their hotel.

It was then that thieves broke into the team's van and took personal items such as backpacks, cell phones, and electronics. The suspects also took team equipment, such as wrestling singlets and head gear.

The team's van was parked in a lot next to the restaurant, Elgin coach Mark Cameron said.

Police pursued the suspects in their vehicle, but said they were unable to catch it. Police said the suspect vehicle is a car which was stolen from the same lot.

Cameron said the wrestling gear is valued at $2,500, while the electronics are valued around $3,000. The coach said the wrestling equipment was purchased through fundraising efforts.

At this time, the number of suspects involved in this case is unknown.

The investigation of the vehicle break-in is ongoing.
