(KMOV.com) – Arson investigators are trying to figure out what started a fire on the altar of a West County church Tuesday night.

The call for the fire came in around 5:45 p.m. as a general alarm fire at the St. Monica Parish Church in Creve Coeur, according to Jerry McQueen, the assistant fire marshal.

The first crews to arrive at the scene found nothing showing, but were waved down by a maintenance worker who said the sanctuary was on fire.

The crew entered the building and found heavy smoke conditions and a small fire on the altar. The fire was extinguished in a few minutes. There is minor damage to the altar and to a nativity scene, but there is heavy smoke damage throughout the room.

According to McQueen, things “didn’t look right,” so investigators were called to the scene.

No one was inside at the time of the fire.

The investigation is ongoing.
