Traffic accidents down, but fatalities up over Christmas holiday, MSHP says

The Missouri State Highway Patrol saw fewer traffic accidents, but more fatalities over the Christmas holiday this year.

Between 6:00 p.m. on Dec. 23 to noon on Monday, Missouri Highway Patrol investigated 260 traffic crashes, which is down almost eight percent from last year. But, the Missouri Highway Patrol said six fatalities stemmed from those accidents, which is four more than last year's holiday stretch.

There were also 86 injuries stemming from the 260 traffic accidents.

Outside of traffic accidents, highway patrolmen arrested 68 drivers for driving while impaired and made an additional 40 drug-related arrests.

Altogether, the Missouri Highway Patrol made 108 arrests.

On a more positive note, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said there were no boating crashes or drownings over the four-day period. In 2015, the highway patrol said there was only one boating crash. However, due to the flooding the area saw last year, there were 11 drownings stemming from vehicles being swept away by the waters.
