ST. ANN, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

There's a lot of clean-up after the holidays, but police are warning people to be careful what you leave in front of your house because it may make you a target for thieves.

Police say they see more robberies and burglaries this time of year, especially right after the holidays.

"Be aware of your surroundings and look out for your neighbors, that's the number one thing that you can do," said St. Ann Police Chief Aaron Jimenez, "Just keep your doors locked and of course your windows locked as well because burglars love to climb through windows."

Other ways you can protect yourself and your belongings include putting your lights and TV’s on timers when you're not home. Also, be careful what you leave in front of your house.

Jimenez said, "We're asking our residents and other people in the neighborhood that you tear down those boxes and throw them in a garbage bag and then put that inside your trash can."

Police say burglars often case the area looking for an easy target. Empty electronics boxes and other items in your trash are a dead giveaway.

"You're going to go where you know people have jewelry, expensive electronics and if you see those boxes, if you see a nice 60-inch thousand dollar TV that the box is out there and you know that TV in inside that house, then why not just take the chance when nobody’s home," said Jimenez.
