CHESTERFIELD, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Police in Chesterfield are looking for the thief who stole gift cards left for trash truck drivers in the 1200 block of Bluffview Ridge Drive.

The gift cards were inside holiday cards that were taped to the top of trash cans.

Tim O'Shea lives on the street and told News 4, "The tape was torn off the bin and the Christmas cards were gone that we had left for the recycle and our trash guy."

Residents said they show their appreciation for the garbage collection workers every year.

"We were just trying to help him out in his life and somebody's stealing that, that, that's just wrong."

Police said they know two gift cards were stolen but more could have been taken and no one noticed they were gone. The thief is described as a man who was driving an older model red car with one headlight out, which may have been an Oldsmobile Alero.

Chesterfield Police Sergeant Keith Rider said he doesn't recommend leaving gift cards on top of trash cans.

"If they're going to give a gift to their trash man, we're asking that they either give it to them face-to-face or if that's not possible due to work or whatever. we're asking they go to their main office."

Police are checking to see if someone in the neighborhood has a surveillance camera that got a good look at the suspect's car.

Victims say they were left trying to explain the crime to their children.

"I was telling the kids like there is a real Santa there is a real Grinch also," said  Suraj Saraf.
