SOUTH ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -

A St. Louis Police officer received a collective helping hand from his community after being shot multiple times by a suspect last month.

Sgt. Tom Lake, who was wounded in ambush-style attack in South City in November. Lake was sitting in his patrol car when the shooting occurred, at Hampton Avenue and Pernod.

Officers later shot and killed the suspect of the shooting, 19 year-old George Bush III.

Sgt. Lake said the experience from that night sticks with him.

"I relive this incident, if not every day, I have flashbacks. I see what's happening. I never lost consciousness," Sgt. Lake said.

But Sgt. Lake said thanks to his faith and the community, he has a positive outlook following the shooting. On Thursday, he had the chance to say thank you to the community at a fundraiser at Bartolino’s on Thursday night.

"I know God has blessed me to be here one more day, to see my children one more day, to see my wife one more day," Sgt. Lake said.
