ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

More than 80 water main breaks in the St. Louis area have occurred in the last two days, and the breaks are likely to continue.

Missouri American Water spokesman Brain Russell said the breaks have repair crews scrambling all over.

"This has just been an ongoing issue in St. Louis County," Russell said.

The cause is the extreme cold weather from last weekend resulting in super cooled river water that the water company uses to send out in aging mains.

"That cold water constricts the main and causes fractures," Russell said.

One of the more problematic breaks this week was in Maplewood. An underground main near Maplewood High School caused minor flooding in the basement of one building for numerous days.  Missouri American Water said it was fixed Wednesday.
