ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

There are more than 10,000 students across St. Louis area school districts who are considered homeless, according to Kathy Connors.

Connors is the executive director of Gateway 180, a shelter geared toward women, children and families who are forced to deal with the unimaginable burden of homelessness.  Gateway 180 works with St. Louis City and County to provide temporary housing, solutions, and resources to get families back on their feet.

“If you just look at numbers in relation to the children in our community, that’s pretty staggering and it's pretty troubling,” said Connors. “A little over 5,000 kiddos attend the SLPS (St. Louis Public School District) are experiencing homelessness. Per DESE (Department of Elementary and Secondary Education), over 6,000 students in our surrounding St. Louis County school districts are experiencing homelessness.”

Connors said during the winter months they are forced to turn away 10 families a day who are seeking shelter. She said there’s just not enough room to accommodate them.
