MoDOT said it pre-treated roads, but timing and temps caused problems

Posted: Updated:

MoDOT said it pre-treated roads before freezing rain moved in, but the timing and length of the precipitation caused the pre-treatment to be ineffective.

Freezing rain moved into the St. Louis area during the day on Friday and caused numerous accidents. Officials said many roads had a glaze of ice. Even though the roads were pre-treated, MoDOT said a perfect combination of factors caused road conditions to be dangerous.

“Wet precipitation came in much earlier than expected and lasted much longer than expected. At the same time that was happening our pretreatment and salt brine was wearing off, and the temperature dropped below 32 degrees, which wasn’t quite predicted to happen,” said Tom Blair with MoDOT. “All of happened the Friday before Christmas, which created all this traffic.”

MoDOT says crews are currently out spreading salt as fast as they can to clear up the roads.
