ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- The driver who allegedly struck a firefighter on I-55 Friday was under the influence of alcohol, police say.

Bryan Kreitler, 42, is charged with driving while intoxicated.

According to authorities, the firefighter was responding to a wreck and was getting out of a fire truck near I-55 and Loghborough when he was hit by an SUV driven by Kreitler.

Officers on the scene said they could smell alcohol on Kreitler's breath.

He was arrested but later released from jail on a $1,000 cash-only bond.

The firefighters was taken to a hospital in serious condition but was released on Saturday.
