ST. LOUIS (AP) - A former employee of the John Cochran Veterans Affairs Medical Center in St. Louis has pleaded guilty to a federal charge for fraud that cost the U.S. government more than $270,000.

Federal prosecutors say 54-year-old Scott Geary of DeSoto pleaded guilty to conspiracy to steal government funds on Thursday. He could get up to five years in prison at sentencing in March.

Geary initially worked as an outside contractor for the VA. The U.S. Attorney's office in St. Louis says he conspired with a VA official to bill for unnecessary work. After being hired to work at the VA, he recruited someone else to continue the fraud.

The co-conspirators have not been charged. The U.S. Attorney's office says the investigation continues.
