Construction will begin Wednesday morning at Forest Park on a restoration project officials say addresses the number one complaint visitors have.

Government and Wells Drives are in poor condition and will be completely rebuilt.  Government Drive will be closed from Skinker to the Zoo while Wells Drive will be closed from Skinker to Tamm Avenue.

Drivers will experience closures until June.

“There certainly is some inconvenience but there will be signage on the streets in the park directing people to get to the Zoo and the Art Museum through alternative routes,” Forest Park Forever Senior Vice President Frank Kartmann said.

In addition to the rebuilt roads there will be new, safe pedestrian crossings.  Sidewalks will be improved with more than two more miles of sidewalks added.

A gathering place for visitor orientation and enjoyment will be added along with 29 on-street rain gardens.  Forest Park is adding new, efficient LED lighting, 153 newly planted trees to go along with 27 more on-street parking spaces.

“At the end of the day I think this will be a really great project and a huge improvement and I think everyone will think it was well worth it,” Kartmann said.
