2.1 million AT&T customers to begin receiving settlement checks

Posted: Updated:

ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- AT&T customers could be getting an early Christmas present this month. The company has been ordered to pay customers $88 million because of illegal charges on previous bills.

The Federal Trade Commission called the practice “mobile cramming,” which is when third-party charges are added to a customer’s bill without consent.

For example, the FTC says AT&T customers were charged about $10 per month for ringtones and text message subscriptions.

The settlement affects 2.7 million current and former customers, and will result in about $31 per customer.

The checks began being issued December 8.
