St. Louis County keeps moving to redevelop Jamestown Mall

Posted: Updated:

St. Louis County officials are moving towards blighting the Jamestown Mall site in North County to clear the way for new development.

On Tuesday, the council's Committee of the Whole heard testimony about the decaying condition of the old mall.

St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger said they're in the process of buying up the land from five different owners and the last parcel needs to be blighted.

"It allows us some flexibility so we can return the property to productive use," Stenger said.

Consultants and developers have stated the mall site can never return to what it once was with 1,000,000 square feet of retail. However, many acknowledge there is a need for some development on the site.

"That doesn't mean this market area can't support retail development on this site to some degree," John Brancaglione of Peckham Guyton Albers & Viets told the council.
