A St. Louis County teaching assistant has been charged with having child pornography.

Matthew McCann, 45, worked as a special school district teacher at Eureka High School.

The crime does not involve any students.

McCann has since been fired from his position at the school.

Charles Crouther, principal at Eureka High School, issued the following letter Monday evening:

Dear Eureka High School Families,

Keeping our children safe is always a top priority.  It is for this reason I’m sharing this information.

St. Louis County Police arrested a Special School District (SSD) teacher assistant who has now been charged with the possession of child pornography. Law enforcement officials shared that these charges do not involve any students at Eureka High School or in the Rockwood School District.

As soon as we received this information from the police, we contacted SSD, and they took immediate action. This individual has been removed from his duties as a SSD teacher assistant at Eureka High School and is prohibited from being on any school district property. SSD shared that this employee was hired in August 2016, and all SSD employees must submit to and pass a criminal background check as a condition of employment.

I can assure you we are taking the appropriate steps to ensure all students have a safe and secure learning environment, and I always want you to have accurate information. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.
