Riverview Gardens School District regains state accreditation

Posted: Updated:

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - A suburban St. Louis school system has shed an unaccredited label that had forced it to pay for students to transfer to non-failing school systems.

The Missouri State Board of Education unanimously voted Friday in Kansas City to provisionally accredit the Riverview Gardens School District, starting Jan. 4. Riverview Gardens was stripped of its accreditation in 2007.

Friday's move comes after the district's performance reports for the past two years exceeded the state's 70 percent threshold for accreditation.

The lack of accreditation has been costly for Riverview Gardens. Under state law, students in unaccredited districts are allowed to attend schools in accredited ones on the home district's dime. Hundreds of Riverview Gardens students now attend other districts. They'll be allowed to remain through the end of the school year.
