ST. LOUIS (AP) - A competing group wants to join forces with SC STL in building a new $200 million downtown St. Louis soccer stadium in hopes of attracting an MLS franchise, and group leaders say they'll pay much of the construction cost to avoid the need for public financing.

SC STL unveiled the stadium plan Nov. 17. Under it, voters in April would be asked to fund up to $80 million of the project.

A letter was released Tuesday from Foundry St. Louis CEO Dan Cordes to Dave Peacock, a former Anheuser-Busch president and a leader of the SC STL effort.

Cordes says the soccer proposal should not drag down city finances and services. He proposes that Foundry join the effort and meet the $80 million gap.

An SC STL spokesman declined comment.
