CAHOKIA (KMOV.com) -

A man wanted by police who was shot and killed by an off-duty officer outside a Walmart store in Cahokia Monday night has been identified as Jason Stringer, 35.

Cahokia Police Chief David Landmann said an off-duty Washington Park officer notified the Cahokia Police Department that a man wanted by police was seen entering the store around 4:50 p.m. with a female acquaintance.

When officers from Cahokia arrived at the Walmart, Stringer ran from them and into his vehicle. The off-duty Washington Park officer detained the female acquaintance while the two Cahokia officers pursued Stringer on foot.

After entering the vehicle, he drove erratically in the parking lot, striking a police vehicle and brick pillar in front of the store, according to police. His vehicle also reportedly came close to hitting several pedestrians.

The suspect vehicle then drove towards the off-duty officer who was standing in the parking lot. The off-duty officer fired several gunshots, striking Stringer  at least once, police said.

Stringer's car then left the parking lot, striking other vehicles on the roadway, and was followed by officers from multiple agencies.

The chase continued for about a mile east on Camp Jackson Road, where the suspect vehicle hit a median, disabling it.

Following the crash, Stringer was taken to a hospital, where he died of his injuries.

Friends of Stringer say they're trying to understand exactly what happened at the Walmart.

"It really doesn't sound right." said Kimberly Clayborn, who helped take care of Stringer as a child.

"The stories are adding up and everybody has their own view of it."

Nearly 20 security cameras are positioned outside the Walmart although authorities aren't saying if the shooting was captured on video.

Stringer was wanted for multiple felony warrants, including fleeing and eluding officers, and felon in possession of a weapon, according to police.

Two Cahokia police officers were injured during the incident. The extent of their injuries has not been released.

Illinois State Police are investigating the shooting and ask that any witnesses contact them at 618-571-4125.
