(KMOV.com) – One person is dead and another is injured following a two-vehicle accident that shut down lanes in both directions on Interstate 55 (I-55).

The accident occurred around 8:46 p.m. on I-55, just north of Route Z in Jefferson County.

Due to a previous accident on I-55, a  2008 Honda Fit, driven by Audra Evans, ended up on it's right side. The Honda was facing east in the northbound lanes. The second vehicle, a 2010 Dodge Charger, attempted to avoid Evans by braking and swerving.

But the front-end of the Charger struck the roof of Evans' vehicle.

Evans was transported to the hospital by a medical evacuation helicopter, where she was later pronounced dead. She was 37 years-old.

The driver of the Dodge Charger, 23 year-old Brittney Kopf, suffered minor injuries.

Northbound I-55 has reopened all lanes but one, while all lanes on Southbound I-55 have reopened.

Traffic was being rerouted onto Highway Z.
