(KMOV.com) - Chesterfield Police have increased patrols and the number of uniformed officers around stores for the holidays in Chesterfield.

Lieutenant Michael Thompson told News 4, "Having that visibility is key, being a deterrent is a key, so you want to have that uniformed presence all the time."

Thompson said there are also officers in plain clothes that are blending in with the crowds of shoppers to look for thieves. And he said stores in Chesterfield have hired a lot of off-duty officers to help with security.

Shoppers have noticed the increased patrols. "In the outlet malls especially a lot of security cars in the outlet mall parking lots and that's nice because I felt especially safe there," said Emily Mollett.

Because the city has so many shopping areas, the department has a unit dedicated to keeping shoppers safe and solving retail crime.
