Tips to avoid over-stuffing this Thanksgiving

ST. LOUIS ( -- This is the time of year when many people indulge a little too much at the dinner table and start to pack on a few extra pounds.

News 4 asked the experts at DePaul Hospital for a few tips to help avoid overeating.

  • Tops on the list: make sure you drink plenty of water before and during your meal.
  • Consuming water will help you feel full so you don't eat as much.
  • Also be sure to include healthy options on your plate, not just your favorites that might be higher in calories.
  • Eat more slowly and savor your food. That gives your body a chance to tell you you're full.
  • Always watch your portion size.
  • Avoid too much alcohol. Not only does it add calories, it can weaken impulse control, making that third helping of potatoes seem like a better idea than it is.
  • Want to try a couple of different desserts? Take a small portion of each one you want to sample.
  • Get up and move. Plan a walk or other physical activity  before and/or after your big meal.

Hopefully following those steps can save you from spending the rest of Thursday glued to a chair feeling like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man
