ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO -

St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger is looking for a new sales tax that will go towards helping police throughout the county.

The proposed half a percent tax is estimated to raise $80 million a year, with $46 million going to the St. Louis County Police.

Chief Jon Belmar said the money will go towards hiring more officers and retaining current officers.

"Our number one role is a reduction in crime," Belmar said.

The proposal needs approval by the council and then it will go before voters in April.

Some on the council said they're taking their time before endorsing the plan.

"I got to look into it more before I make a decision," said councilwoman, Hazel Erby.
