ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) - The holiday season is the busiest time for shoppers, but it is also when they are most vulnerable.

As simple as it sounds, police will tell you the first step to preventing crime during the holiday shopping season is to lock your car. The second is for shoppers to be aware of their surroundings.

"They get distracted very easily, they're on their phones, they try to look for things, they don't really pay attention to their surroundings. So that's one of the biggest things always be aware of your surroundings," said Des Peres Police Captain Sean Quinn.

The Des Peres Police Department works closely with West County Center to prevent crime from happening at the busy mall and to investigate crimes when they happen.

Some shoppers plan ahead for how to reduce their risk of being a crime victim.

"I try to park closer to the store and I try to go in the daytime," said shopper Faith Ferrell.

Captain Quinn also stated an easy way to reduce your risk of being a victim is to shop with a buddy whenever possible. He also said it is important for women to keep their purse with them and not in a shopping cart. If you plan on shopping at multiple stores, make sure to leave all purchases in the trunk and out of sight.

"One of the good habits you can get into is remember where you parked, remember some kind of landmark, said Quinn.

He said hunting for where you parked could make you less aware of your surroundings and more vulnerable. Additionally, wait until you are close to your vehicle to unlock it with the key fob so a potential robber cannot spot where you parked to meet you at your car.
