A program trying to steer young people toward careers, not crime, is expanding and accepting applications.

It was two years ago this week that a grand jury decided not to in indict former Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson in the death of Michael Brown.  It was during that same trying time that a local business decided to step in and be a force for change.

Thanks to a generous grant from Emerson Electric, which is headquartered in Ferguson, the STL Youth Jobs program expanded to the Dellwood and Ferguson areas in 2014. The Ferguson Forward initiative has helped employ 359 youth, working with more than 80 employers. The summer jobs program, which started in St. Louis in 2013, has already employed more than a thousand youth with 140 different companies.

For the first time, the winter program, which was first focused on Ferguson, is now expanding to the entire north St. Louis County community.

People aged 18 to 24 can apply right now. They can be placed at companies that range from hospitals, to Fortune 500 companies, and even boutiques. They get paired up with a mentor, learn financial planning and budgeting, and get hundreds of hours of work experience. Plus, it's paid experience.

Right now, there are at least 50 jobs available in North County. Applications are already being accepted for positions that will start in January and run through May.

The program has already seen payoff in the investment. Leaders said 90 percent of participants reported the experience prepared them for their next job.
