ST. CHARLES, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

An 85-year-old St. Charles man lost more than $6,000 after he thought a won a prize from Publisher’s Clearing House.

The man, who did not want to be identified, said he received a letter saying he won a $2.5 million prize. He also received a check.

The letter instructed him to withdraw $6,150 for attorney’s fees. He said he cashed the check and sent the withdrawn money to New York.

“It was apparent it was a scam when the bank said the check was a forgery,” said the man.

Many victims of the scam have been seniors. The Better Business Bureau says even though letters saying you have won a big prize look legitimate, most of the time they are fake.
