An ambulance for the Washington Area Ambulance District has considerable damage after hitting two deer on I-44 and is listed as disabled.

The ambulance was taking a patient from Mercy Hospital in Washington to Mercy Hospital in St. Louis.  As it was traveling east on I-44 in Eureka, two deer jumped across the median and into the path of the ambulance.

Another ambulance arrived on the scene to continue the transport of the patient to the hospital who was unharmed in the accident.

Despite crews being trained to be alert, it is the second year in a row that an ambulance of the Washington Area Ambulance District hit a deer.

"At this time of the year, especially, you have to be vigilant about keeping your eyes on the side of the road as well as what's in front of you, don't get tunnel vision, make sure you're scanning to the left and to right as you go down the road," Terry Buddemeyer of the ambulance district said.

According to Buddemeyer, the stretch of I-44 between Eureka and Highway 141 is known to have a lot of deer, and drivers need to be especially cautious when driving through there.

The Department of Conservation says more than 2,000 deer were checked in Franklin County, which leads the state of Missouri during the start of shotgun deer season.

Howell County and Texas County were close with more than 1,900 deer.

The total harvested so far across the state is 96,131.

Hunters are given reminders on the threat of Chronic Wasting Disease found in deer.  This is the first year the state is checking for deer Chronic Waste Disease.  Hunters are encouraged to make sure deer is cooked properly.
